Zeekr 009 Shows China's Luxury MPV Market No Longer Needs an Imported Playbook

Zeekr 009 has broken into China's luxury MPV market without relying on Huawei-backed branding or a celebrity executive persona.

A high-end MPV without the usual backing

That makes its success more revealing. In a segment long dominated by joint-venture and imported models, Zeekr has shown that a Chinese intelligent EV brand can compete on product, technology and targeted marketing.

The article says more than 75 per cent of Zeekr 009 owners are political, business or entertainment elites. In the first half of 2025, the model sold 11,292 units and led China's luxury MPV market above roughly $56,000. The high-spec Zeekr 009 Grand also became a regular leader among ultra-luxury four-seat models.

The performance is significant because premium MPVs have often been linked to status symbols such as the Toyota Alphard and Lexus LM, or to newer Chinese brands supported by technology ecosystems. Zeekr 009 entered with a different formula.

Product strength first

The Zeekr 009's success begins with product definition. It avoids the dull box-like appearance often associated with MPVs, using a 5,217mm length, 2,024mm width, 1,812mm height and 3,205mm wheelbase to create both presence and space.

Its electric architecture also addresses the two common objections to high-end MPVs: slow charging and weak driving performance. The 108kWh version uses an 800-volt system and 5C fast-charging battery, allowing a 10 to 80 per cent charge in 11.5 minutes and 500km of range added in 10 minutes, according to the article.

Range varies by battery and drive configuration. The 108kWh rear-wheel-drive version reaches 740km CLTC, while the dual-motor all-wheel-drive version reaches 702km. The 140kWh version reaches 900km in single-motor form and 850km with dual motors. The dual-motor version can accelerate from 0 to 100kph in 3.9 seconds, challenging the view that MPVs must sacrifice performance.

Comfort remains central. The second row uses Sofaro first-class-style seats with soft Nappa full-grain leather, 16-way electric adjustment, three-level heating and ventilation, and multi-mode pneumatic massage. The cabin includes dual Snapdragon 8295 chips, a 35.95-inch AR head-up display, a 17-inch 3K rear ceiling screen, an 8.6-litre heating and cooling refrigerator and a 30-speaker Yamaha surround-sound system.

Double-layer acoustic glass and active noise cancellation reinforce the quiet luxury positioning. Zeekr did not try to make the MPV different for the sake of novelty. It focused on the basic luxury promises of space, speed, charging, comfort and silence.

Marketing aimed at the right circles

Zeekr 009 also used focused marketing rather than broad traffic chasing. In Hong Kong, it signed Aaron Kwok as its first celebrity owner and attracted owners including Carina Lau and Myolie Wu. In mainland China, it worked with Cecilia Cheung as a celebrity owner for Haohan Intelligent Driving 2.0.

The strategy connected the model with high-end consumer circles through regional celebrity influence and ownership storytelling. Combined with offline experience events and targeted online content, the campaign helped Zeekr reach buyers more precisely than conventional mass advertising.

Intelligence as a new luxury rule

The Zeekr 009's importance goes beyond sales. It shows how intelligence is beginning to redefine luxury MPVs. In a market where many brands use Huawei-backed systems to compensate for their own software gaps, Zeekr has tried to build a distinct non-Huawei identity.

The Zeekr 009 Grand comes standard with a roof-mounted lidar, and some versions offer advanced driving hardware. Buyers can choose between dual Nvidia DRIVE Orin-X chips and a Mobileye EyeQ5H dual-chip solution. With options, the vehicle supports map-free urban NZP, remote parking and fingertip parking.

Its active safety system can monitor the driving environment and detect living beings inside the cabin, adding a more human layer to intelligent safety.

Inside, dual Snapdragon 8295 chips support multi-screen interaction, while the Jizhi Dialogue 1.0 voice system enables more personalised interaction. Features such as a child-guardian app and intelligent privacy sound shield move the car beyond the old luxury formula of seats, screens and leather.

A signal for China's premium ambitions

The success of Zeekr 009 is part of a broader rise in Chinese intelligent vehicles. The country has moved from dependence on foreign suppliers in key technology areas toward a stronger domestic ecosystem involving automakers and technology companies such as Baidu, Huawei and Pony.ai.

Zeekr 009 matters because it does not rely on only one feature or one partner. It combines high-voltage architecture, fast charging, luxury cabin execution and in-house intelligent-driving development into one product.

Its Hong Kong performance reinforces the point. From January to June 2025, Zeekr 009 sold 582 units there, twice the volume of the Alphard during the same period, according to the article. Hong Kong buyers value product strength and technology, while local rules and tax policy give pure EVs additional advantages.

Zeekr 009 has not only sold well. It has helped shift the definition of a luxury MPV from imported status and business reception toward intelligent electric mobility. That is why its success matters for the next stage of China's premium-car ambitions.
